The new Maroquinerie de Guyenne: a sustainable and responsible anchor
The Maroquinerie de Guyenne, located north-west of Bordeaux, marks Hermès’ arrival in a new region and demonstrates its commitment to the provinces of France.
A manufacture on a human scale
Hermès reaffirms its strong regional anchors in France with the inauguration of its 19th leather goods workshop, in September 2021. For this first site in Gironde, the choice fell on Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, a municipality on the banks of the Dordogne with a population of a thousand. This new facility will ultimately employ nearly 260 people, preserving the artisanal dimension of production and promoting high-quality working conditions for all employees.
Training and the transmission of know-how
Recruited locally, the future leatherworkers will be trained and mentored by experienced artisans, who will pass on their exceptional know-how. Open to people from all backgrounds and career paths, recruitment focuses on promoting diversity, solidarity and local anchors. For eighteen months, students from vocational high schools, job seekers and career changers identified in partnership with the Pôle Emploi employment service and the Greta adult education service will learn to master the assembly, stitching and finishing operations that will enable them to make the house’s bags and leather goods from start to finish.
Responsible architecture
With the aim of offering Hermès employees the ability “to make beautiful things in beautiful places”, Bayonne-based architect Patrick Arotcharen designed the new Maroquinerie de Guyenne by exploring the links between architecture, nature and climate. Its wood, concrete and glass structure incorporates solar panels and a rainwater recovery system. This former backfill storage site has been rehabilitated, developed and planted to promote biodiversity.
